Sue Sylvester Vogue – Jane Lynch's 5 Most Memorable Roles

Jane Lynch is currently starring as hilariously acid-tongued cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester in Fox’s fall breakout hit, Glee. It is very, very likely that you saw Jane Lynch and thought she looked awfully familiar – from showing up in an early episode Empty Nest to portraying a dog handler in Best in Show, she’s starred or played bit roles in more commercials, television, and movie roles than you can count. In almost every one, her dry wit and excellent deadpan delivery has stolen the scene from even major actors. The following is my list of Jane Lynch’s five most memorable roles to date.

  1. Sue Sylvester, Glee. Sue Sylvester, in my opinion, is the only reason to watch Glee. The characters are saccharine, the musical numbers are hopelessly AutoTuned, but you can always count on Sue Sylvester to save even a bad episode. She’s hilariously arrogant and her political incorrectness stops you in your tracks. Choice line: “I love minorities so much, I’m thinking of moving to California to become one!”
  2. Christy Cummings, Best in Show. While Glee finally placed Jane Lynch front and center for a nationwide audience, many people remember her as the super butch dog handler Christy Cummings in Christopher Guest’s Best in Show. Playing the arrogant, hypercompetitive trainer and handler of a poodle (of all breeds) named Rhapsody in Blue, Jane Lynch postively shined. Because Christopher Guest allows his actors to ad lib their lines, the mockumentary showcased Jane Lynch’s comedic genius, quick wit and dry delivery.
  3. Paula, The 40 Year Old Virgin. As Paula, Steve Carrell’s boss who was a little too willing to de-virginize him in The 40 Year Old Virgin, Jane Lynch once again channeled arrogance and confidence to the extreme. In a field full of male-heavy comedy geniuses – in addition to Steve Carrell, she had to contend with the likes of Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd – she more than held her own. She stole the show.
  4. The woman who “didn’t know” about acid reflux disease, Nexium commercial. She did do a commercial for Tilex, but this Nexium ad is when I and many others first noticed Ms. Lynch. It seems a little strange – after all, I don’t remember anyone else in that commercial – but there was something about her explaining how she “didn’t know” how acid reflux disease could ruin the lining of my esophagus that caught our eye.
  5. Diana Reid, Criminal Minds. In a total change from her usual comedic roles, Ms. Lynch makes a multi-episode appearance on this criminal procedure drama series when she plays the schizophrenic mother of one of the main characters. She strips the dripping self-importance and hilarious overconfidence so common in her other parts and gives us compelling vulnerability. A worthwhile viewing even if you don’t watch Criminal Minds.
